Mind Meister Update 2

Online education has come a long way from its beginning. Many tools have been developed to further enhance online education and Mind Meister is one of them. Brainstorming is a very important aspect of creating something. Not only is brainstorming important, but collaborating is also. Mind Meister allows for both of these things in the online context. There are many advantages to doing these things online. First, collaborating online allows people from all over the world to pitch in. This is great because different cultures can work on things together and organize their work all through Mind Meister. The pro version of Mind Meister allows users to video chat while working on their mind maps. For people who are willing to pay for it, this is a great feature. For businesses that have global locations Mind Meister can be a great tool for them to use. It would allow workers at all locations to brainstorm on certain topics involving the company. Another great aspect of collaborating online is the ability to organize everything more effectively. When you complete a map on Mind Meister it can be arranged to your liking. Instead of having all of your papers scattered everywhere, you can now organize them all through one tool. For example, I have been taking notes while using Mind Mesiter and have noticed that everything is a lot easier to find and read. I don't have to worry about my handwriting being sloppy.

E-Learning

1. How does the tool relate to the topic of the week?

The topic of the week was E-learning and the tool that was introduced was MindMeister. This tool relates to E-learning in many ways. MindMeister allows users to create mind maps via computer or the web. If you purchase the premium subscription you can create mind maps offline, but the version that we were introduced to only allowed online mapping. Once a map is created users can share them with either specific people or everyone online. Once shared the maps can be edited by other people and then you can view the changes that others have made. This creates a great learning experience for people. For instance, if someone didn't know a specific topic very well, then others could edit their map and knowledge would be shared. This allows people to experience a new kind of learning. This learning would be E-learning.

2. What function does the tool serve?

MindMeister serves as a way people can collaborate on certain topics more easily. MindMeister allows for easy sharing of mind maps with others. Once the maps are shared the collaborating can begin. The maps can then be edited by everyone who it is shared with. Mindmesiter makes sharing ideas and reviewing other's ideas a lot easier and convenient. MindMeister also allows people to organize their thoughts more effectively. Instead of writing everything down on a piece of paper, MindMeister keeps everything organized in a paperless way. People can make their mind maps as elaborate as they like. Almost anything can be mapped on MindMeister. Things like school notes, weekly schedules, and daily tasks are among my three favorite.

3. What did you find most interesting about the tool?

What I find most interesting about MindMeister is how it allows the sharing of mind maps. These maps can be shared either publicly or with specific people. I only shared my maps with people I knew and it was really cool. When people would edit my maps it would show up in real time on my computer. So as they were making the changes, I could see exactly what they were doing. Also, something that I found very interesting about the tool is how easy it is to use. There are only a few controls involved in MindMeister, but they sure are effective.

4. What did you find most challenging about the tool?

This was the first tool that we were introduced to that I had no challenges with. MindMeister was a very simple, but extremely effective tool. It was very easy to create the mind maps on MindMeister. To add a new idea all you had to do was double click on the screen and move it to where you wanted. You could then edit the font and style of the map to your liking. MindMeister also allowed users to add photos to their maps. This to was very easy to do. Adding photos on MindMesiter was very similar to adding photos on Face Book.

5. Does the tool improve of complicate communication?

I believe that MindMeister improves communication greatly. MindMeister's ease of use allows users to share their maps easily with others. The users then communicate via map changes and chat to get the best and most detailed maps they can. Even if MindMeister is used offline it still improves communication between the individual using it. It allows the user to communicate with himself more effectively. MindMeister is also great for group mapping. If it is difficult for all members of the group to get together and create a map of something, then MindMeister allows the group to do this more easily. Also, if group members live in different areas, then MindMeister will allow them to collaborate on ideas more effectively.

6. What is your critique of your experience?

Overall I thought that MindMeister is a great tool that serves its purpose magnificently. It doesn't try and complicate things by adding too many features. MindMeister is a very simple tool that allows people from all over the world to collaborate on topics. I will definitely be using MindMeister on a weekly basis from now on. I have used it to create maps of my daily schedule, weekly schedule, and outlines for papers. I am even considering buying a premium subscription to MindMesiter because it is so effective.

Mindmeister Update 1

Mindmeister is a social media tool that allows people to manage their thoughts and organize their belongings on a mind map. It has various features that allow the users to interact with others and customize their maps to their liking. Mindmeister can be incorporated in learning very easily. Students who take messy or unorganized notes will be able to organize them in a neat way using Mindmeister. I believe that this social media tool is great. I have used it for many different things. This would include creating a class schedule, organizing my weekly assignments, organizing my school notes, and more. I love how Mindmeister allows its users to share their maps with either everyone or specific people.

Organizations and E-Commerce

1. The topic of the week was organization and e-commerce. E-commerce is defined as the buying and selling of products over electronic systems such as the internet and other computer networks. This week the social media tool that we were introduced to was Flickr. Flickr allows people and organizations to manage photos and videos online. Flickr relates to the topic of the week because it is a social media tool that allows people to share and advertise their photos with others. Flickr can be used as an advertisement tool. In fact, many organizations and businesses have taken advantage of this and posted many advertisements to Flickr. In the description of the photos is usually a link to where the consumer can buy the product.

2. Flickr serves the function of allowing people, organizations, and businesses to share photos with each other. people can share their favorite photos with their friends, organizations can share photos that represent what they are doing, and businesses can share photos that show off their products. Currently, Flickr costs $6.95 a year for a premium subscription that allows unlimited photo and video posts. Flickr also serves as a very cost effective way for companies to advertise their products. Millions of people are subscribed to Flickr  and the opportunity for advertisement is great.

3. What I found most interesting about Flickr was its ease of use. Everything seemed very simple to use and, in fact, was. Searching for photo topics was awesome. You could find pictures about almost anything. uploading pictures was extremely simple. All that needed to be done was dragging the desired picture into the website. It is extremely simple for businesses to advertise their products and services on Flickr. If I was just starting a new business, then Flickr would be the place where I would start advertising. It is very cheap and can be very effective.

4. Flickr was mostly very easy to use except for finding groups. I found it rather difficult to find groups that actually seemed legitimate. During our in-class Flickr tutorial I could not find a good group that was related to hair salons. I tried searching for groups relating to other topics and came up with the same results. All of the groups that came up in the results had only a few members. Joining groups that only have a few members isn't a very good way to advertise your business effectively.

5. I believe that photos are one of the greatest ways to communicate. With that being said, I think that Flickr is a great tool that improves communication. Photos can be extremely symbolic and carry a lot of emotions. Flickr allows people to share their favorite photos with others. This can help people understand others better. Some people may not know how to express their emotions so they let their pictures do that for them.

6. I think that Flickr is a great social media tool. After using Flickr I found that other social media tools like Facebook are easier to use and do just about the same things. Facebook allows the sharing of photos and videos just like Flickr. I think that Facebook is just a better tool for sharing these things because so many more people use Facebook than Flickr. I don't think that I will be using Flickr to share my photos. I will just stick with Facebook for that.

1. The topic for the week was online gaming communities. The tool that we used that related to this topic was dungeon blitz. It was an online game that allowed users to interact and make choices based off of what they did or said. Dungeon blitz relates to the topic of the week because it does all of the things that online games should do. It allows people to either talk or chat with other players. People can create groups in the game and play throughout it with each other.

2. The function that dungeon blitz serves is to allow people to interact in different ways than usual. Online gaming is an ever increasing trend and people really enjoy it. Dungeon Blitz offers this to people. It allows players to work together to solve quests and missions while allowing players to chat with each other about it.

3. While i was playing dungeon blitz i found that it was really addicting, which is not a good thing for me. I started playing and then i looked at the clock and two hours had passed. There really isn't much to the game other than solving quests and then solving some more quests, but it really does a good job of keeping the players entertained and engaged. This is what I found most interesting about the tool of the week.

4. Because the controls and concept of dungeon blitz were so simple and easy to understand, I really didn't find anything about the game to be too difficult. My main problem with the game would probably have to be the currency system. If I wanted to buy a pet of some new armor I needed a ridiculous amount of in-game currency. To solve this problem dungeon blitz would allow players to buy currency with real money. This is something that I found very annoying about the game.

5. I think that dungeon blitz help improve communication. It allows people to interact in ways that are different from normal. I think that people really enjoy playing these kinds of games. It lets users act like teammates and work together. Also, dungeon blitz is integrated into Facebook and twitter so people's friends can know how they are doing in the game and even join in on their adventure.

6. I had a really great time playing dungeon blitz. I really am not that big of a gamer, but after playing this game my opinions on it have changed significantly. I can definitely see myself playing this game a lot more even though we won;t be talking about in class anymore.

Virtual Communities/Cyber-Cultures

1. The topic of the week is cyber-cultures and virtual communities. A virtual community is a social network of individuals who interact through specific social media, potentially crossing geographic and political boundaries in order to pursue mutual interests or goals. Second Life builds on this idea because it allows users to find other people who share similar interests. Users create a avatar who will essentially be them and go about different areas and interact with other users. The possibilities in Second Life are almost unlimited. People will most likely be able to find similar interests with other users.

2. Second Life is very similar to the video game, The Sims. It uses avatars to allow people to express their ideas and interests with anonymity  In my use of Second Life I found that most of the people that actually chatted with me were very open. I wasn't comfortable sharing personal information, but some people were extremely comfortable doing so. Second Life is a social media tool and its main function is to allow users from different areas to converse via avatar and share beliefs and interests. Second Life allows users great customization with their avatars. This is something that sets Second Life apart from other social media tools. Facebook and Twitter don't allow for much customization other than a profile picture. Second Life lets users be anyone they want to while still sharing their real interests with others.

3. My experience with Second Life was definitely very different than other things I have done. The main factor of this was the ways users were able to customize their avatars. There are a few different categories of which people may choose their avatars. Vampires was one of them and I had the strangest encounters with these avatars. Eventually I just avoided chatting with these avatars haha. The other choices were humans, animals, robots, and vehicles. My avatar was a robot. I'm not to sure why I choose a robot, but it did look interesting. People customized their avatars in really intriguing and impressive ways. My avatar was just a robot from the list of avatars you can choose from. I'm not the most artful person. This was what I found most interesting about Second Life.

4. There were some things that I found difficult about Second Life. One was that it was hard for me to go into some of the worlds because of lag. I'm not sure if it was the Second Life servers or just a bad internet connection. This is something that can probably be fixed fairly easily though. The main issue that I had while exploring Second Life was finding people who actually wanted to chat with me. It seemed like most of the people were either not interested or just jerks when I tried to talk to them. In my whole experience of using Second Life I was only able to intelligently communicate with about 8 people. All of the others just typed obnoxious and mean things. I feel as if the creators of Second Life can take some kind of action to make sure that their users are using the tool properly. This was my main issue with Second Life.

5. I feel that when Second Life is used properly it can help people communicate, but when used improperly it complicates communication. Second life makes it easy for users to find niches that they are interested in. For example, if somebody id interested in playing pool, they can go to a bar in Second Life and find a pool table and play with others. In this aspect I think that Second Life improves communication. It may be very difficult for people to communicate effectively with others while using this tool. Most of the users seem to not care about the others and just do whatever they want. This makes it hard for the users who are using Second Life for the correct reasons to find other people with common interests. In this way I believe that Second Life only complicates communication. Also, Second Life uses a great amount of anonymity, which can also lead to complications in communication. It is hard to have a personal conversation with other users in Second Life because you don't know who you are talking to. I also think that this only makes it more difficult for communication.

6. My experience of using Second Life was interesting, but also disappointing. I initially thought that my experience would be mostly positive, but after a few hours of exploring Second Life I know that it is something I will most likely never use again. I hate when people can hide their real identity behind things and Second Life allows just this. It just creeps me out to not know who I am talking to. When used properly I think that Second Life can be an effective way of communication and be a great virtual community. Unfortunately most of my interactions with others within the tool were negative and I have a hard time recommending it to others.

Interpersonal Communication

1. How does the tool relate to the topic of the week?
The tool that we used that relates to the topic of the week is meetup.com. This is a website that allows people to create profiles based on what they enjoy doing. It lets people find other people in their area who share the same interests. meetup.com relates to interpersonal communication because people can meet others and have face to face communication and people can meet in groups and have group conversations.

2. What functions does the tool serve?
Meetup.com serves as a way people in a certain area can meet online and face to face. People join groups depending on their interests. For example, some groups may include dancing, games, outdoor activities, and fishing. These were some of the most common groups that I found around the Quad Cities area. When people join these groups dates are set for everyone in that group to meetup and do whatever activity they all enjoy. This is why it's called meetup.com

3. What did you find most interesting about the tool?
There are many interesting things about meetup.com, but the thing that I found most interesting is that meetup not only allows people to meet face to face, but encourages it. This is what sets meetup apart from other top social media tools like facebook, twitter, and pinterest. Instead of just giving ideas for things meetup allows people to meet each other and show them what they love to do. Meetup.com allows people to find others who are interested in the same things that they are. I think that this is a great thing because it encourages people to be social with each other and not just sit in front of a computer and talk with text.

4. What did you find most challenging?
When I first visited meetup.com i thought that the layout was a little confusing, but after using it more I found it very easy to use. When you join a group, you are told how many people are also in the group with you. The thing that I found most difficult about meetup was the upcoming events tab and the calendar tab. I thought that the layout of the upcoming events tab was just awkwardly set up. When you click on the event it says recent events that took place and I found it confusing to really know which event was the actual event. Depending on who creates the events and calendar, the setup can be very confusing. Some of the groups that I tried looking at had nothing on their calendar, but had a lot on their upcoming events. In others I found the calendar very easy to use and all the events were accurate with the upcoming events.

5. How does the tool help or complicate communication?
I believe that meetup.com helps communication and doesn't hurt it. Like I said before meetup.com allows people to meet each other based on similar interests. I would say that meetup hurts communication if it didn't allow people to meet face to face. I think that meeting people in person and not having a relationship based entirely online is the best way to communicate. This is what meetup.com allows people to do.

6. What is your critique of your experience?
I enjoyed looking through meetup.com and I thought that it was a great social media tool that allowed people to meet based on interests. I think that the tool is setup great other than the few problems that I described earlier. Some of the groups that i tried joining weren't set up very well by the creator. You just have to find the right group and I'm sure that you will really enjoy your experience. In the end I think that meetup.com is a great social media tool. Depending on your interests you will find other people in your area that appreciate the same things that you do.
